Home About MPMK Submission Guidelines

What We're Looking For
Knitting and crochet patterns are both fine with us, as long as they are fashion-forward or unconventional in some way. We are also interested in trend reports, and links to fun stuff you find online.

If you are submitting a pattern for something wearable, we want patterns that are fashion-forward. Here are some ideas for getting inspired:

Current runway shows, which can be found on Style.com,
or if you have access, subscription services such as StyleSight.

Fashion magazines, including the mainstream magazines like Vogue, or even better, international or indie magazines.

Fashion forecasts: You are truly lucky if you have access to fashion forecasts such as
Fashion Box, which forecast the trends about 2 years in advance. Use them if you have them.

We want original designs that are “inspired by” the current or future fashion trends. While it is
not illegal to knock-off fashion, it is kind of boring. Even if you do closely knock-off a particular garment, your choice of yarn and knitting techniques can make it something new and wonderful. We want fashion-forward, and we want to see where your inspiration came from, but we also want to see your creativity.

We aren't just about fashion! We welcome knitting and crochet patterns for wearable and non-wearable items that are unconventional, artistic, or avant-garde in some way.

Payment
We pay between $25 and $50 per pattern, according to the complexity of the pattern. Payments are made via paypal only.

It's not all about money is it? Non-monetary benefits to publishing in MPMK include getting your pattern edited by a professional technical editor, and published in an online magazine that provides exposure for your designs and your website.

Format
Your pattern submission should include the following:

  • The pattern, using our handy Pattern Template in either Word format or Plain Text.
  • Your contact information (including your paypal address if Option A is chosen)
  • A short paragraph about yourself, including a link to your blog or website if desired
  • A head-shot (of yourself)
  • Clear and fabulous pictures of your finished object  in jpeg format (we can't stress this enough: photos must be suitable to publish!)

Your pattern submission must be new, original, and not previously shown in any format on any website. Once your pattern is published in MPMK, you may include a picture of your design on your website with a link to the pattern on MPMK.

We Want More Than Just Patterns
We would love to receive trend reports and links to fun things you find online. Did you see some great knitwear in a runway show? Is there a trend going on in the department stores right now? What's going on amongst the urban hipsters who set the trends? Tell us about it! Write it up and if you can, include links to pictures online or your own photos (we would love to get your photos of knitwear in stores or on the street). Trend reports don't have to be very long, and we will consider a wide range of topics.

If you find interesting things online and want to share it with our readers, please send the link, and a very brief description of what it is to Robin at robindodge@metapostmodernknitting.com. We might include your link in our blog or on our MetaStylist page.

Yes, you can submit a design idea for review!
You don't have to commit to working up a sample and writing a pattern just yet. We will gladly consider idea submissions. Please give us some information about what you're planning and which season you're planning it for, tell us about your inspiration and what type of yarn you're considering, and include a sketch or a few sketches of your idea. We will let you know as soon as possible if we are interested in having you work up your idea.
