MetaPostModernKnitting.com is a celebration of fashion-forward and avant-garde knitting. We want to bring you knitting patterns, trend analysis, and news that represents the more artistic, unconventional and forward-thinking realm of knitting.
We will release our Spring/Summer publication in March, and our Fall/Winter publication in September. Our blog will be continuously updated.
Why we started MPMK
The idea for this publication sprang from a group of knitters who work at the library of a (fashion) design school in Los Angeles. We call ourselves the Fashion Librarians Competitive Knitting Squad, or FLiCKS for short. Being surrounded by all kinds of design inspiration and being hooked on knitting, it was only a matter of time before we blended the two.
As a part of our daily routine, we work with all kinds of design resources that serve as inspiration for our knitting. We have access to specialized trend forecasts and reports, runway shows, a wide variety of design periodicals, and of course a large collection of design books (as well as an impressive collection of knitting books).
A librarian's job is all about helping people find what they're looking for, and organizing and sharing information. It's only natural that we want to share our inspiration with the knitting community. But putting together any kind of publication is really hard work, and since we all work full-time jobs and have other interests and pursuits, we need all the help we can get. We figure there are lots of other knitters out there who are as inspired by fashion, art, and design as we are. We welcome your contributions of patterns, articles, and links.
What’s with that name?
Don't worry, you can just call us MPMK. We don't take our name all that seriously. For that matter, the use of the word "meta" on our site is not usually meant in a literal sense. MetaPatterns, for example, does not refer to patterns about patterns, but rather it's our catchy phrase for our pattern section. The inventor of the name MetaPostModernKnitting.com, Rachel "Ivy" Clarke, does the best job of explaining it:
“You never really know what movement you're in while you're in it. Did Hemingway know he was a modernist? Did Charlotte Bronte know she was writing in the period of gothic literature? The most recent identifiable movement has been labeled ‘postmodern’ (it's apparently debatable whether we're still currently in that movement or not). One of the characteristics of postmoderism was the ‘meta-‘ treatment, things like ‘meta-fiction,’ where you would have a novel about a character writing a novel. I found it pretty over the top, personally; the whole movement was way out on a limb (imo). So the term ‘metapostmodern’ is a way of identifing what might come next, a reactionary movement against the uber-seriousness of postmodernism by completely inflating it to ridiculous proportions, akin to the evolution of Mannerism out of a time of strict realism. ‘Meta-‘ from the Greek meaning ‘later than’ or ‘following’ but also ‘transcending’ or ‘beyond.’”
